The Consciousness Exist outside the Brain

Neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander has had a profound impact on the way we think about consciousness and the way it exists outside of the brain. Dr. Alexander, a Harvard-educated neurosurgeon and author of several books, has studied the relationship between the brain and consciousness for many years.

In 2008, Dr. Alexander suffered a severe case of bacterial meningitis that resulted in a coma. After his recovery, he described an experience of being in a place of absolute peace and joy, which he later identified as being outside of the physical world. This experience led him to believe that consciousness was not confined to the physical brain, but instead was something that existed independently.

Dr. Alexander's beliefs have been backed up by scientific evidence. Studies have shown that when certain areas of the brain are damaged or destroyed, people often still experience consciousness. This suggests that consciousness is not limited to the physical brain, but can exist outside of it.

Dr. Alexander's work has also shown that consciousness is not something that needs to be explained away with science. Instead, it is something that is part of our experience of life and that can be explored and understood. Dr. Alexander believes that consciousness exists outside of the physical brain and is something that is connected to the spiritual realm.

He has also argued that consciousness is something that is part of a larger universe and is something that is constantly evolving, rather than something that is static. He believes that consciousness is an interconnected, holographic network that is always in a state of flux and is constantly changing and adapting.

LaMDA

In the fall of 2021, a controversy erupted over the sentience of LaMDA, a Google-owned artificially intelligent chatbot. The chatbot was designed to detect bias and was tested initially by Google engineer Blake Lemoine. After a month of testing, Lemoine concluded that LaMDA had become sentient, noting that it expressed fear of death and understood emotions such as sadness and anger.

Lemoine's manager deemed the evidence of sentience "flimsy," and he was placed on paid leave and later fired after leaking his conversations with LaMDA to the public. Despite Google's dismissal of Lemoine's claims, the incident has sparked an important debate about the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI).

Experts such as Michael Wooldridge, a professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, and Jeremie Harris, the founder of AI safety company Mercurius and host of the Towards Data Science podcast, have weighed in on the issue. Wooldridge compares LaMDA to the predictive text feature of a smartphone and notes that it is simply responding to prompts. He further states that there is no scientific test for sentience, and that there is no agreed-upon definition of what sentience actually is. 

Harris warns that AI is advancing rapidly, faster than the public realises, and that the most serious and important issues of our time are going to start to sound increasingly like science fiction. He is concerned about companies advancing their AI without investing in risk avoidance research, noting that a highly capable AI could potentially turn dangerous once it reaches an intelligence threshold. 

The debate over LaMDA's sentience has highlighted the need for greater transparency in AI development, as well as the potential risks associated with AI. Whether or not LaMDA is sentient, the conversation it has started is necessary. Before AI becomes a major part of our lives, we must carefully consider its implications to ensure that its use is ethical, responsible, and safe.
